{"id":8438,"date":"2026-07-07T23:19:28","date_gmt":"2026-07-07T14:19:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/?p=8438"},"modified":"2026-07-07T23:59:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T14:59:39","slug":"tesla-model-yl-delivery-japan","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/tesla-model-yl-delivery-japan\/","title":{"rendered":"Taking Delivery of a Tesla Model YL in Japan: Replacing a BMW X3 with 500,000 km"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On May 23rd, a brand-new Tesla Model YL joined our household.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It&#8217;s the successor to my BMW F25 X3, which I finally let go after driving it for 500,000 km (about 310,000 miles). I wrote about selling the X3 in a separate post \u2014 currently available in <a href=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/f25-sale-price-tax-refund\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japanese<\/a> only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I honestly meant to write this up right after delivery, but somehow more than a month slipped by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A new car comes with a surprising amount of homework, and before I knew it, here we are.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Better late than never \u2014 here&#8217;s a record of delivery day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For those unfamiliar: the Model YL is the long-wheelbase, 3-row, 6-seater version of the Model Y. As of this writing it&#8217;s sold in a limited number of markets, Japan being one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Why this car out of all the EVs available? That&#8217;s a long story I&#8217;ll save for another post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We already run a BYD ATTO 3 as our second car, so the upsides and quirks of EV life are nothing new to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This wasn&#8217;t a &#8220;first EV&#8221; moment \u2014 it was more like &#8220;adding another EV to the fleet.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And with that experience behind us, my honest conclusion was that this is the best EV you can buy in Japan right now, all things considered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Model YL takes over the X3&#8217;s old job: my daily commuter. That&#8217;s worth a note for readers outside Japan: at a traditional Japanese dealership, taking delivery of a new car is a bit of an event \u2014 a dedicated appointment, a salesperson walking you through everything, sometimes even a cloth-reveal moment and flowers. In person, it looked far more imposing than in photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"332\" src=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/modelyl-delivery-001-2.jpg\" alt=\"Model YL parked among other Teslas at the store, rear view\" class=\"wp-image-8445\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/modelyl-delivery-001-2.jpg 450w, https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/modelyl-delivery-001-2-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The paperwork took no time at all, and then it was basically &#8220;there you go.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compared with all the back-and-forth I remember from buying the BMW, it was almost anticlimactic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I had expected something like this, but even so \u2014 the whole handover was done in about ten minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staff member who helped me looked visibly worn out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Curious, I asked how many cars they deliver per day. The answer: &#8220;More than twenty. Every day\u2026&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Part of the rush was a Tesla Japan promotion: cars delivered by the end of June came with three years of free Supercharging. That deadline clearly had Teslas flying out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If an Osaka store is moving that many cars, I can only imagine what Tesla&#8217;s big delivery hub in Ariake, Tokyo looks like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With the next customer&#8217;s delivery already queued up behind me, there was no reason to linger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The staff member walked me through setting up my phone as the key, and that was it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I wished him luck, and he was off to prep the next car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I kept the on-site fiddling to a minimum and decided to figure out the rest myself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"All_the_Setup_Happens_On-Screen\"><\/span>All the Setup Happens On-Screen<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Everything else is handled by an on-screen tutorial on the car&#8217;s big touchscreen, which you work through at your own pace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"298\" src=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/modelyl-delivery-002-1.jpg\" alt=\"Seat adjustment tutorial displayed on the Model YL touchscreen\" class=\"wp-image-8446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/modelyl-delivery-002-1.jpg 450w, https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/modelyl-delivery-002-1-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 450px) 100vw, 450px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>The screen (in Japanese) reads: &#8220;Driver Settings \u2014 Seat Adjustment. Move the sliders to adjust the seat&#8217;s position, height, and angle,&#8221; with the controls labeled lumbar support, recline, seat position, and seat cushion extension.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Seats, mirrors, steering wheel \u2014 the screen teaches you how to adjust all of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a car with almost no physical buttons, this is where you learn the controls. In an emergency, you can shift gears by pressing P, R, N, or D on the roof console.&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There was even an on-screen explanation of how to shift gears from the roof console buttons in an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this runs automatically without taking up any staff time. Practically a blank slate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That silent, effortless surge of acceleration is a completely different animal from the diesel I drove for 500,000 km.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I thought the ATTO 3 had gotten me used to EVs, but a car this size gliding off in silence still felt fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I&#8217;ll be commuting nearly 200 km a day in it, so I expect to get a feel for real-world efficiency and range very quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrapping_Up\"><\/span>Wrapping Up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A month late, but that&#8217;s the record of Model YL delivery day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Delivered on May 23, 2026<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>No ceremony \u2014 the handover was astonishingly quick<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Initial setup via on-screen tutorials, paperwork via the app<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This blog has mostly been a log of BMW DIY maintenance, but from here on I&#8217;ll be writing up my notes on the Model YL the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since it&#8217;s replacing the F25 as my commuter, the mileage is going to pile up fast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Charging, the practicality of the third row, running costs \u2014 I&#8217;ll keep documenting the real-world experience as the kilometers accumulate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next up: my impressions after the first month of ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>This article is also available in <a href=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/modelyl-delivery\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Japanese<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Delivery day for our Tesla Model Y L \u2014 the 3-row, 6-seat long-wheelbase Model Y \u2014 at Tesla&#8217;s Toyonaka Service Center in Osaka, Japan.
