Own a modern diesel long enough, plus the car will eventually put a number on the dash telling you exactly how many litres it wants.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time it asked for 14 litres. The button is labelled &#8220;round up to whole litres&#8221;.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More stations carry <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vda.de\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AdBlue<\/a> pumps now, with a dedicated nozzle you use like a fuel hose.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Around here it runs \u00a5200 to \u00a5300 per litre, roughly $1.30 to $2.00. Putting in 14 litres lands near \u00a53,000, about $20.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Boxes_bought_online\"><\/span>Boxes bought online<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten or twenty litre cartons delivered to the door work out near \u00a5100 per litre, about $0.65. You pull it out, then pour. No funnel, no separate adapter, nothing else to buy.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That last part matters more than it sounds. The black cap is diesel, the blue one next to it is AdBlue. A step ladder makes a useful shelf to rest the carton on while it drains.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten litres takes two or three minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">You cannot overfill it by accident. The car has an overflow cutoff, so it simply stops accepting fluid when the tank is full.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One warning: AdBlue is a urea solution, so spills leave a white crust. The requested amount dropped from 14 litres to 5.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So roughly 9 litres went in. A carton always keeps about a litre back no matter how long you hold it up.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bar sits near 100%, the warning is gone. Close enough to full.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Wrapping_up\"><\/span>Wrapping up<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>One 10 litre carton cleared the warning completely<\/li>\n<li>Cost was a little over \u00a51,000, around $7<\/li>\n<li>Time taken was under ten minutes<\/li>\n<li>A BMW X5 AdBlue refill at a pump would have been roughly triple the price<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Doing it yourself is slightly more faff than pulling into a station. The economics are not close, though, so I keep a spare carton in the garage.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Next warning is probably six months out.
