You grab it, you tug, it comes free.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting it back is the hard part. You have to line the plug up with a downward-facing port you cannot see, working entirely by feel.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">USB-C being reversible saves you half the trouble, yet I still ended up jabbing at the ceiling of the glovebox several times before it clicked home.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The days I want to check the footage are usually days when something happened, so knowing this little wrestling match was waiting at the end made it worse. A male USB-C plug sticks out of the back, which is what goes into the factory port.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For \u00a5634 I was braced for something toy-like. The real thing is solid metal, cold to the touch.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The glovebox trim is grey, so the colour does not stand out much either.<\/p>\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Installation_is_just_pushing_it_in\"><\/span>Installation is just pushing it in<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is no job here to speak of. With the Tesla glovebox USB hub in place, the most tedious part of pulling dashcam footage is gone.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Recording carried on normally after the hub went in, for both the dashcam plus Sentry Mode. I had half expected the car to stop recognising the drive with something in between, so that was a relief.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_to_do_with_the_two_spare_ports\"><\/span>What to do with the two spare ports<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is arguably the interesting part. Even with the dashcam using one port, two are still free.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So I went looking for what a Tesla glovebox USB hub can actually feed.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Play music files (a USB stick loaded with tracks works from the media player, sharing one drive with dashcam footage as long as the folders are separate)<\/li>\n<li>Charge a phone out of sight inside the compartment<\/li>\n<li>Split the dashcam onto one drive with Sentry Mode on another, so a failure only takes out half<\/li>\n<li>Keep a spare recording drive plugged in, ready to swap over<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/ownersmanual\/model3\/en_us\/GUID-F311BBCA-2532-4D04-B88C-DBA784ADEE21.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tesla&#8217;s owner&#8217;s manual<\/a>, a recording drive needs to be formatted as exFAT with a folder called <code>TeslaCam<\/code> at the root. Tapping Controls \u2192 Safety \u2192 Format USB Drive on the car&#8217;s screen builds that for you automatically.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What I would really like is to plug in something much larger.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The catch is heat. A Tesla dashcam writes continuously, cabin temperatures climb hard in summer, so I am not sure how an SSD would hold up in there. That question is why I have not pulled the trigger yet.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I will decide how to fill those two ports once I have read up a bit more.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Final_thoughts\"><\/span>Final thoughts<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That is a \u00a5634 Tesla glovebox USB hub from AliExpress, fitted to a Model YL.<\/p>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u00a5634 total (approx. $4 USD), down from \u00a5740, shipping included<\/li>\n<li>Two USB-A ports plus one USB-C on the front, with a male USB-C on the back for the factory socket<\/li>\n<li>The ports face forward, so you plug in where you can see instead of by feel<\/li>\n<li>Dashcam plus Sentry Mode recording carried on with no trouble<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Without Premium Connectivity, every look at the footage means pulling the drive out then putting it back.
