This is a choice, not a pair. Without either of them, the option is not even listed.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Autosteer_Beta_was_what_I_used_first\"><\/span>Autosteer (Beta) was what I used first<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For the first few weeks after delivery I had Autosteer (Beta) enabled.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Turning it on brings up a long disclaimer. Any torque on the wheel drops it, which is spelled out in Tesla&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tesla.com\/ownersmanual\/modely\/en_us\/GUID-20F2262F-CDF6-408E-A752-2AD9B0CC2FD6.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">owner&#8217;s manual<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since I have not bought the option that changes lanes for me, every lane change means steering myself. So every lane change kills Autosteer.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the Model YL it takes the speed control down with it. You do not get to keep cruising with only the steering handed back.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In practice I now press the right button to switch Autosteer off before I move over, because letting it drop on its own is not smooth.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The road I drive most is a busy multi-lane arterial. Overtake, re-engage, pull back in, do the whole thing again. It wore me down.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The screen behaviour around lane changes did get better in an earlier update, which I wrote about in <a href=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/tesla-modelyl-lane-change-zoom-out\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_I_went_back_to_plain_cruise_control\"><\/span>Why I went back to plain cruise control<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So Traffic-Aware Cruise Control is what I leave selected now.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It keeps a set gap to the car ahead at a set speed. Ordinary adaptive cruise control, in other words. Almost every new car sold today has it, so there is nothing novel here.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There is one more reason it stays selected. You cannot swap from Autosteer to cruise control while driving. The choice is made before you set off, so whichever one is selected is what you have for the whole trip.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Autosteer earns its keep on long steady runs instead. Coming home from Kyushu, mostly a single lane during quiet hours, it was clearly the better of the two.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That drive is <a href=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/tesla-modelyl-602km-on-one-charge\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Summary\"><\/span>Summary<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tesla Autopilot without FSD gives you Traffic-Aware Cruise Control or Autosteer (Beta), one at a time<\/li>\n<li>Autosteer cancels on every lane change, taking the Model YL speed control with it<\/li>\n<li>Auto Lane Change on the turn signal sits behind the paid options<\/li>\n<li>On a road with frequent lane changes, plain cruise control is the more usable of the two<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tesla Autopilot without FSD is not nothing. For flowing along a motorway it does the job.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, on a \u00a57.49 million (approx. $50,000) car it feels like a waste. Autosteer is right there in the menu, yet what I actually use is the same cruise control every other car has.<\/p>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The cruise control has one problem of its own, which is the wipers. That got long enough to be <a href=\"https:\/\/everinterest.net\/en\/tesla-modelyl-cruise-control-auto-wipers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">its own post<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div
